Getting Started with BitTorrent

Are you new to BitTorrent?

Ready to start downloading videos, movies, songs, games, and software?

...If so, read on!

What is BitTorrent?

To put it simply BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol which allows large files to be delivered online to you. Unlike downloads from a single source, BitTorrent is a P2P protocol which leverages all participants of the P2P network that have the file. Before a file can be a part of the BitTorrent network, it is converted into a torrent file. And in order to keep track of all these files, there are websites (such as Vuze) which, obviously, track the torrent files.

Why go to Speckly?

Torrent search simplified. Rather than hunt each BitTorrent website individually, you simply type in your search terms in the Speckly search engine, and our engine will then search these websites and return results in a familiar and easy-to-understand format.

So I found the file that I would like to download. Great, but what do I do now? ...Install BitTorrent client software.

Before you can download any BitTorrent file, you will need to install a BitTorrent client software on your computer. (And if you already have installed one, please skip down to the next section.) Basically, the BitTorrent client software keeps track of the torrent files, downloads the torrent bits of data, and puts it together on your computer in the original file format (for example, mpeg, avi, mp3).

Please feel free to search the Internet for the many free BitTorrent client software that you may choose from. We've included a couple of our favorites below. [NOTE: They do a much better job describing the installation process, so please go to their websites for installation instructions.]

Download and Enjoy!

Once installed, you are now ready to download files. After you have done your Speckly search, click on the file link that best fits your search criteria. That will take you to the BitTorrent website and torrent download link. Click on that link and it will bring up the Download Window. Depending on which browser you are using, you will select to 'Open' the file. In our example, we are using uTorrent as the default BitTorrent client software.

This will startup uTorrent (if not already running), and open the uTorrent download window. You can learn more about the various options later, but for now, you just need to click the "OK" button to get going. uTorrent will then start the download. The time it takes to download the file will vary depending on the file size, popularity of the file, bandwidth, and other factors which we will not bore you with right now.

Once downloaded, you can open the files through the uTorrent client, or you can go to the folder where you have downloaded the files and open it from there. Now, enjoy!

I'm ready to start! Take me back to Speckly Home!
